Glacial microsedimentology—a new lens to investigate glacial sediments—a review

چکیده

Glacial sediment research using thin sections began post-1945. Microsedimentology examines sediments at the microscopic level deriving insights into processes of glacial erosion, transport, and deposition. Two issues exist (1) difficulty by some in recognizing microstructures section (2) absence quantitative data making reproduction difficult. The latter is hard to resolve but more image capture software methodologies are now becoming available reasonable costs. Thin two-dimensional three-dimensional objects, this must be considered when measurements, fabrics other assessed. Research microaspects followed a typical scientific trajectory: description with little uniformity or common “language” for observed microstructures: standardization allowed comparison between different sediments; standardization, came an open-ended classification; cross-comparison multiple sections—a means study needs developed. It has become apparent that basic principles structural geology had applied. Thus, micromorphology subsumed microsedimentological where stress parameters, mapping deformation structures contextual integration allows understanding how these have been formed. Examples development stages micromorphology/sedimentology presented here as well discussion future avenues study. In addition, used illustrate many aspects parameters necessary understand sedimentology sedimentation.

Glacial earthquakes.

We have detected dozens of previously unknown, moderate earthquakes beneath large glaciers. The seismic radiation from these earthquakes is depleted at high frequencies, explaining their nondetection by traditional methods. Inverse modeling of the long-period seismic waveforms from the best-recorded earthquake, in southern Alaska, shows that the seismic source is well represented by stick-slip,...

study of glacial valley landform case study: sahand glacial valleys

abstract a mountain glacier, when it occupies a river valley, immediately begins to change the cross-section and profile of that valley. river valleys in mountain areas tends to have v-shaped profiles. glaciers work to widen as well as deepen their valleys and the typical cross-section of a glacial valley is u-shaped. the u-shaped glacial valley is one of the most characteristic of glacial land...

Glacial-Interglacial Atmospheric CO2 Change —The Glacial Burial Hypothesis

Organic carbon buried under the great ice sheets of the Northern Hemisphere is suggested to be the missing link in the atmospheric CO2 change over the glacial-interglacial cycles. At glaciation, the advancement of continental ice sheets buries vegetation and soil carbon accumulated during warmer periods. At deglaciation, this burial carbon is released back into the atmosphere. In a simulation o...
